An Apicectomy is a surgical method of removing the lower part of the infected root of a tooth surrounded by a cystic lesion caused by a dental abscess where endodontic treatment (root canal treatment) has not produced the desired results.
The purpose of the operation is to fight the infection that affects the tissues around the root of the tooth and to clean the damage from the bone, in order to prevent the extraction of the tooth.
The procedure is performed in the surgery with the use of local anesthesia, so there is no pain during the procedure and after the wound has healed. In some cases, swelling may occur during incision healing, which is perfectly normal after any surgery. Your dentist will be able to give you instructions for the next few days.
